This castle come from the middle age, as its square tower testifies. It is mainly known for having belong to Françoise d'Aubigné so called Madame of Maintenon, favorite and secret spouse of Louis XIV. The french style gardens was designed by Le Notre.
At the rear edge of the park, today used as a golf, we can see the aqueduc of Maintenon, built in 1683 by Vauban on Sun King's request. Foreseen for driving the water of the Eure river to Versailles, it should have 3 stages, but only one was partially built.
