Castle of Vaux le Vicomte

This castle, one of most beautiful in Ile de France, has been built between 1656 and 1661 by Louis Le Vau for Nicolas Fouquet, superintendent of the finances of Mazarin. The gardens have been designed by the young Le Nôtre.

The opening ceremonial in great pomp was done in presence of the young king Louis XIV. The castle beauty induced the king's jealousy and et perhaps was the cause of Fouquet's disgrace, his imprisoning for life and the seizing of all his goods.

Some people consider that it inspired Versailles to the Sun King, in response to its magnificence.
